It is now officially Spring, but I see little evidence of it having arrived. The Cove is full of ice, there is still snow around even though we haven’t had much accumulation this winter and the winds have been ferocious! Thankfully they have diminished today and I did see a crow tearing pieces of burlap from around my rose tree to build his /her nest (they both build the nest). They are very wise birds, so I will have to believe that Spring is indeed here.

I am finding that I miss my garden. We relocated a year and a half ago and I miss my beautiful flowers, seeing my grandchildren water them, eating Poppa’s tomatoes and spinach from his greenhouse, watching them play ball and sending it crashing into my flower bed and running to retrieve it “before Nana comes and takes it!”

The colourful Leopard’s Bane was the first to bloom.

I made many flower arrangements using blooms I had cut from the garden.

The fountain was always a hit.

We had fun here, playing, roasting wieners over the fire pit, trying to play the Ugly Stick, sipping wine with neighbours and friends, hosting  parties, having tea and coffee while looking for pesky slugs, barbeques, running through the sprinkler and so much more.

It was such a pleasure to sink one’s hands into the warm earth, to feel at one’s fingertips the possibilities of the new season.”   Kate Morton

Thankfully all the grandchildren like to visit this different  lifestyle we have chosen.

A Bluebell for Dad

Hope is the periwinkle softness

nestled in the craggy cliff

rising from the salty beach rock

growing and blooming against all odds.

It is the tiny sturdy stem

bending, but not breaking

in the ferocious gale.

It is the cheeky bell shaped flower

that asks nothing of me

yet brings such joy and pleasure

if I just fix my gaze upon it.

Happy Spring from the Cove!

  1. Beautiful post – the pictures, the words – made me think of our own garden here in Ontario, which is just starting to poke its head up after the long winter months. Soon our grandchildren will be running around, and family will be gathering at poolside or around the fire pit – these are such sweet times.
